Reclaiming Democracy

Reclaiming Democracy

There is an old quote that there are no dead ends in democracy, yet the Greek political system appears to be stack in a dead end, sinking in debt and miss management.

The reason is probably because what is going on in Greece and many other places in the world is no democracy. What is happening is a disguised oligarchy, under the skin of the dead democratic republic.

Media, corporations and political gangs have managed to master the system of manufacturing consent.

Very successfully they manage to leave the public with no options than those suited to their interests.

Decreasingly few have a say in what affects increasingly more as voting becomes more and more indirect. The beneficiary of political actions are not the same as the ones paying the cost as their influence in decisions is weakened.

Poles and votes in elections of the past 10 years show an increasing trend of the people’s dislike to the parties in power and the desperation in the rest of the out-dated alternatives. This is clear through opinion and voting poles but also through election results. Increasing amount of people do not vote anymore, as no party seems to reflect their view’s and respond to their needs. Parties are elected not by increasing their votes but by the decrease of their opponent’s votes. The majority of people asked during poles, ‘who they would feel more confident in voting’ they respond that none of the current leaders would be capable of managing the country’s problems and needs. Trust and confidence in public speakers is dropping in an increasing rate as classical obscure and generic statements convince nobody about equality, respect and support to the lower income groups.

The parties of power appear to have no difference in handling the public issues and are relying on foreign consultation that is, as expected biased, to the benefit of the groups that is coming from.

Young people have no ‘podium’ to express ideas and thoughts as the exposure is controlled by the entangled system of media that is closely linked to power parties through money and power relations.

Young people willing to work towards improving the political infastructure will have to rise through a corrupted system and by the time, in a position to do change it is most likely to not want to change the system that made them.

We seem stuck in an obsolete political and economic system based in ideas and needs of the past.

Nevertheless we live in a time where independent means of expression are available. The internet is a mean were the sum of very large and potentially ‘infinite’ subjective ideas can form current objectivity.

‘Pirate bay’ has managed to form a movement through internet and gain a seat in the European parliament.

The current generation that will soon step into power is the generation of the internet. Freedom in transferring knowledge and ideas is possible through the media of internet. Our generation is presented with a great opportunity to form the media and reclaim democratic expression.

Issues can be raised, opinions heard and movements developed to form parties that can potentially be given the power to change rotting systems. Independent forums is the media to reclaim democracy.
